The work of CFHHZ with housing cooperatives and housing groups focuses on capacity building in self help housing methods and alternative building methods.

The housing cooperatives are able to build and rehabilitate their houses through their cooperative savings. CFHHZ is promoting Stabilised Soil – Block (SSB) making technology that use portable machines being produced by the University of Zambia’s Techonology Development Advisory Unit (TDAU). The technology is environmentally friendly and uses soil whihc is stabilised with use of cement. Building housing using this technology cuts building costs by more than 30%.

Income generating activities

To increase the saving base for coperatives, CFHHZ promotes income generating activities such as gardens and tailoring. The funds made from these ventures are funnelled towards housing construction and rehabilitation through the savings.

Energy savings Techonologies

CFHHZ also promotes green energy and energy saving technology and products by working with organisations that are leading this initiative on the market. This is in line with our work on climate change and environmental sustainability.

CFHHZ’s work in waste management

CFHHZ is working on waste management around peri-urban communities in Lusaka. This is a joint effort with Manja Pamodzi of Zambian Breweries and Millennium Development Challenge to clean up the Lusaka city. Youths in communities with a CFHHZ presence are trained on waste management and recycling. Waste is collected and sold to recycling companies enabling the collectors to raise income from this activity. This is a waste management initiative with an enterpreneurial twist. Communities currently collecting waste are Bauleni, Chawama, Kanyama and Mtendere.
